Let’s just say that pie didn’t last long. I love a good crumb topping on apple pies, and I took this one a step further by adding chopped pecans and oats on top. That evening, we used a couple of those freshly picked apples to bake up this Dutch Apple Pie. You know what they say…the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. It’s almost like that time I carried a basket of peaches with me as my carry-on item from a trip to Charleston, SC. My Mom took an entire suitcase of apples home. My Mom brought up an extra suitcase filled with some of my childhood toys, and let’s just say that extra suitcase came in handy when it came time for them to return to Nashville. She hadn’t gone apple picking in years, and she was definitely making up for lost time! I believe we picked somewhere around 35 pounds of apples. However, while we were snapping pics, my Mom was off to the side quietly picking apples. We had a blast taking some fun photos of Blakely in the orchard. Hey, at this rate, that girl will graduate to making apple pies by this time next year! In fact, the only way we could keep her from crying was by letting her walk around with an apple in her mouth. We soon discovered that little Blakely loves apples. But in the end everyone made it safe and sound…albeit a little tired!Īs part of our Weekend of Fun, we took everyone up to Saratoga to see the horse races (more on that coming soon!) and we also took a morning trip over to one of the local apple farms. It was my niece’s first plane trip, and it sounds like the plane rides were a bit of an adventure. My sister and little niece joined her on the trip, too. My Mom made the trek up from Nashville a couple of weeks ago to visit. We make several trips to the orchard every Autumn, and we come back every time with a bag of apples that’s almost too heavy to carry. But there is something just incredibly awesome about going out and picking your own apples. I’ve gone a little overboard with apple-related recipes lately. So you guys know my obsession with apple orchards by now. Grab some fresh apples and bake up this Dutch Apple Pie…then serve with a cup of hot coffee on a crisp Autumn evening!
